Torrside Brewing Sentinel offers a contemporary spin on the classic English Porter, melding traditional dark malts with modern hop character. The aroma opens with a comforting blend of toasted bread, milk chocolate, and light caramel, enlivened by a bright, citrusy lift of lemon peel and grapefruit from a light dry-hopping of Centennial hops. On the palate, a soft, creamy chocolate sweetness and nutty undertones are balanced by a gentle, herbal bitterness and a clean, refreshing citrus finish. This 5% ABV dark ale strikes a harmonious balance between rich British malt complexity and a vibrant American hop accent.
Appearance. Deep brown to dark copper-brown with brilliant ruby-red highlights when held to the light. It is capped by a moderate, persistent light tan head that leaves delicate lacing on the glass.
Aroma. Moderate aroma of toasted biscuit, milk chocolate, and soft caramel, beautifully integrated with a light, fresh citrus twist of grapefruit and floral notes derived from the Centennial dry-hopping. Low fruity esters are present, with no diacetyl.
Taste. Initial impression is moderately sweet and malty, showcasing flavors of cocoa, toasted nuts, and English toffee. A subtle, clean citrus character from the hops emerges mid-palate, leading into a moderate hop bitterness that balances the sweet malt. The finish is clean, smooth, and medium-dry with a lingering hint of roasted malt and orange peel.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with moderate carbonation and a light, smooth creaminess. Exhibits no harshness, astringency, or warming alcohol presence, making it highly drinkable.
