Torrside Brewing’s Candlewick is a deep dark American Stout from Derbyshire that defies its sessionable 4% ABV with a robust sensory profile. Pouring a jet black, it releases a bold aroma of roasted coffee beans, dark chocolate, and a resinous, citrusy hop presence. The palate is greeted by an immediate wave of bittersweet cocoa and lightly burnt toast, balanced by a firm, refreshing hop bitterness. Despite its light strength, it maintains a satisfyingly creamy texture and a dry, clean finish. This is a highly drinkable yet assertively roasty and hoppy dark ale.
Appearance.Jet black in color (SRM 35-40), completely opaque under a large, persistent light tan head that leaves dense lacing on the glass.
Aroma.Moderate to high intensity aroma of dark roasted malts, characterized by dark chocolate and freshly ground espresso. This is accompanied by a moderate resinous, piney, and citrusy hop aroma, with low fruity esters and no alcohol warmth.
Taste.Begins with a bold, roasted impression of bittersweet cocoa and dark coffee. Low caramel malt sweetness is quickly balanced by a firm hop bitterness and citrusy hop flavors. The finish is dry with a lingering, lightly burnt roast character and clean bitterness.
Mouthfeel.Medium-light to medium body with a surprisingly smooth, creamy texture for its strength. Carbonation is moderate to high, with zero alcohol warmth and only a very low, non-astringent roast grain dryness.
