Toccalmatto B-Space Invader
This award-winning Black IPA from Birra Toccalmatto strikes a masterful balance between extreme character and refined drinkability. A high-intensity resinous hopping profile delivers distinctive forest berry aromas, cutting through a sophisticated architecture of dark malts. The foundation reveals layers of brown caramel and toffee, evolving into complex nuances of dried fruit and licorice. Subtle hints of roasted coffee provide structure without introducing harsh or ashy notes, ensuring the hop-forward essence remains the focus. As a Specialty IPA, it successfully bridges the gap between deep, dark malt complexity and the assertive bitterness expected of the style, finishing clean and incredibly smooth.
Appearance. Deep ebony to black (35–40 SRM), opaque in the glass. It supports a persistent, creamy, light tan head that leaves dense lacing.
Aroma. High intensity hop-forward aroma featuring resinous pine and dark berries. The malt character is moderate and complex, showing toffee, toasted nuts, and a light touch of roasted coffee. Fermentation profile is clean with very low esters.
Taste. Initial impression is hop-dominant with resin and berry flavors. The mid-palate transitions into brown caramel, licorice, and dried fruit. A firm bitterness is well-integrated with a restrained, smooth roast character that suggests coffee without being burnt. It concludes with a dry, lingering finish and a clean aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, slightly creamy texture. Carbonation is moderate. Displays a very light, well-integrated alcohol warmth and negligible astringency.
