Tiny Rebel’s The Norris is a vibrant Wild Specialty Beer that showcases the unique chuckleberry—a hybrid of gooseberry, redcurrant, and jostaberry. This complex sour ale undergoes eighty days of oak aging in ex-Chardonnay barrels, imparting refined vinous layers. The sensory experience is led by sharp, tart red fruit and a distinctive grapefruit zest, balanced by earthy turmeric and soft vanilla from the wood. Wild fermentation notes provide a funky backdrop to the bright acidity, while the Chardonnay influence lends a sophisticated dryness. It is a refreshing, multifaceted exploration of British berry hybrids and barrel-driven character.
Appearance. Pours a hazy, glowing ruby-pink to soft reddish-orange (10-15 SRM). It features a modest, light-pink head with fair to poor retention, typical of acidic wild ales, leaving thin lacing on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity with a profile of sharp redcurrant, tart gooseberry, and citrusy grapefruit. A distinct earthy, spicy turmeric note provides complexity. The Chardonnay barrels contribute aromas of white grapes and a hint of vanilla. A noticeable wild funk presents as light leather or dusty hay, with a clean lactic acidity.
Taste. The initial impression is sharply tart and bracingly fruity. Flavors of chuckleberry—merging redcurrant acidity with gooseberry tang—dominate the palate. Mid-palate reveals grapefruit pith and a subtle, earthy turmeric spice. The ex-Chardonnay barrel aging adds dry wood tannins and a soft vanilla creaminess that rounds out the acidity. Very low bitterness; the finish is bone dry and lingering with a vinous, acidic snap.
Mouthfeel. Medium-light body with a refreshing, brisk mouthfeel. Carbonation is moderate to high, enhancing the perceived dryness. Alcohol warmth is negligible. A slight woody tannin from the berries and oak provides light astringency.
