The aroma is immediately dominated by high-intensity layers of dark cocoa and milk chocolate, supported by the style’s signature roasted coffee and toasted malt notes. On the palate, a rich, fudgy sweetness reminiscent of baked goods is balanced by a firm hop bitterness, providing a structured backbone that prevents the finish from becoming cloying. Subtle resinous hop notes emerge through the heavy malt profile, while the moderate body ensures a smooth, approachable character. It successfully bridges the gap between a classic, robust stout and a contemporary, dessert-forward ale.
Appearance. Jet black and opaque (SRM 40) with a thick, persistent tan head that displays excellent lacing and retention.
Aroma. High intensity of dark chocolate and sweet cocoa, followed by moderate aromas of roasted coffee and lightly charred grain. Low resinous and citrusy hop notes are present, alongside subtle dark fruit esters.
Taste. Initial impression of rich milk chocolate and bittersweet cocoa, transitioning into moderate roasted malt flavors of espresso. A firm hop bitterness (estimated 45-50 IBU) provides a clean balance to the malt sweetness. The finish is medium-dry with a lingering roasted grain and chocolate aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a smooth, somewhat creamy texture. Carbonation is moderate-high, providing a pleasant tingle that lightens the palate. Alcohol warmth is very low and well-integrated.
