Timmermans Kriek Retro Lambicus offers a masterclass in traditional Belgian blending, marrying young and barrel-aged lambic with whole natural cherries. The sensory experience begins with a vibrant, deep crimson hue and an airy, effervescent head. On the nose, a bright burst of tart cherry dominates, underpinned by the complex, earthy funk of Brettanomyces—reminiscent of hay and barnyard. The palate delivers a crisp, frank acidity that dances with a subtle, rounding sweetness. Waves of fermented cherry meld with the woody depth of aged oak barrels, finishing dry and exceptionally refreshing. This Fruit Lambic captures a historic balance between puckering tartness and elegant fruit vibrancy.

Appearance. Deep ruby-red to garnet with bright clarity; a tall, mousse-like pinkish head with good persistence and airy, lively bubbles.

Aroma. High intensity; dominant aroma of tart, fermented cherries blending seamlessly with barnyard funk, horse blanket, and hay-like notes. Subdued aged hop character and a sharp, lactic tartness are present without being overwhelming.

Taste. Initial impression of lively acidity and bright cherry fruit; malt flavor is low, masked by a complex profile of hay, aged oak, and funk. Bitterness is negligible, with the balance heavily tilted toward tartness and fruit. The finish is dry and cleansing with a lingering, pleasant cherry skin astringency and a very light rounding sweetness.

Mouthfeel. Medium-light body with a prickly, high carbonation; moderate tartness and a slight puckering quality. No noticeable alcohol warmth and a clean, refreshing mouthfeel.

Its flavour – bitter but with a very slight sweetness – recalls how pleasant it is to drink a beer that’s saturated in history. Timmermans Tradition Kriek Retro is to be savoured as if you were looking at a painting by Breughel.

With its tart aroma, this Kriek of long-standing tradition elegantly reminds the drinker that the cherry is the distinctive element in this gueuze. Old lambic nevertheless accounts for most of its flavour, which is made only slightly smoother by its fruitiness. It releases a variety of very pure sensations on the tongue, concluding with a superb acidity that is frank but also refreshing and healthy, in keeping with tradition. Its brightness is equalled only by its sparkle and its light-as-air foam.
