Three Sisters Brewery Taranaki IPA
Taranaki IPA delivers a vibrant southern hemisphere interpretation of the American IPA, showcasing a lush collaboration of New Zealand-grown hops. The aromatic profile is led by intense notes of apricot and stone fruit from Rakau, paired with the piney resin of Waimea and the signature grapefruit and floral lift of NZ Cascade. A foundation of Ale malt and Vienna malt provides a slightly toasty, bready richness that balances the firm bitterness. Despite a distinct hop haze, the palate remains crisp, finishing with a lingering citrus zest and a smooth, resinous dryness that underscores its 6.8% strength.
Appearance. Deep gold to light amber (7–9 SRM). Pours with a moderate, persistent off-white head leaving significant lacing. Notable hop haze is present, ranging from slight to moderate opacity.
Aroma. High intensity. Prominent New World hop character featuring lime zest and pine needles from Waimea, coupled with floral grapefruit from NZ Cascade and ripe stone fruit such as peach and plum from Rakau. Low, clean, bready maltiness with a hint of toasted grain and a clean fermentation profile.
Taste. Immediate hop-forward impact of citrus peel and resinous pine. The mid-palate reveals stone fruit esters and a supporting grainy, slightly toasty sweetness from the Vienna malt. Medium-high bitterness is firm but well-integrated. Finishes dry with a lingering hoppy aftertaste of pine and grapefruit pith.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, slightly oily texture from the heavy hopping. Moderate to high carbonation. No harsh astringency, though a light, pleasant alcohol warmth is noticeable from the 6.8% ABV.
