Darkin Ra is a sophisticated Baltic Porter that beautifully balances traditional European brewing heritage with a unique spicy twist. A robust grain bill of Vienna and Munich malts provides a deeply toasted, nutty foundation, while chocolate malt adds layers of dark cocoa and molasses. The addition of rye introduces a subtle, peppery spice that elevates the complex dark fruit esters. Noble Czech Saaz hops provide a faint floral and spicy counterbalance to the rich malt sweetness. Fermented with German lager yeast, it offers a clean, exceptionally smooth profile with a deceptive alcohol warmth, making for a refined, multi-layered sipping experience.
Appearance. Opaque dark mahogany with deep garnet highlights (SRM 28). Crowned by a thick, persistent, tan-colored head with excellent lacing. Displays brilliant clarity despite its near-opaque appearance.
Aroma. High intensity of rich maltiness, featuring notes of deep toast, toffee, and dark chocolate. Prominent dried fruit esters reminiscent of plums and raisins are well-integrated with a moderate, clean alcohol presence. A subtle, spicy edge from the rye and a faint floral note from the hops emerge as it warms. No burnt or acrid character; entirely smooth and vinous.
Taste. Richly malty entry with complex layers of molasses, dark chocolate, and toasted nuts. The addition of rye provides a distinctive light spicy character that cuts through the initial sweetness. Moderate dark fruit flavors like black currants and prunes emerge mid-palate. Bitterness is medium-low, providing balance against the malty start. The finish is smooth and dryish, leaving a lingering impression of licorice and mild roasted coffee.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and remarkably smooth, possessing a creamy, mouth-filling texture. Medium-high carbonation provides a lively lift, preventing the beer from feeling heavy or syrupy. A gentle, well-aged alcohol warmth is present but integrated, with no astringency.
