Arctic Crypt is a monolithic Imperial Stout designed for the winter’s peak. It pours a deep, opaque black with an oily viscosity, releasing aromas of roasted hazelnut coffee and rich, fine chocolate. The inclusion of oatmeal provides a luxurious, velvety mouthfeel that carries the deep caramel and molasses notes of brown sugar. A partial blend of Buffalo Trace bourbon barrel-aged stout introduces sophisticated layers of toasted oak and vanilla, which meld seamlessly with the intense roasted malt profile. The finish is long and indulgent, defined by a smooth alcohol warmth that balances the beer's substantial residual sweetness.
Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque (40+ SRM). It produces a dense, deep tan head with moderate retention that leaves thick, oily legs on the glass as it recedes.
Aroma. High intensity with a complex blend of bittersweet chocolate, espresso, and roasted hazelnut. Substantial notes of brown sugar and molasses are complemented by the Buffalo Trace influence, yielding vanilla, toasted oak, and a hint of bourbon. Low dark fruit esters of raisin and prune emerge as it warms.
Taste. Massive initial impact of dark chocolate and roasted coffee. The mid-palate is rich with brown sugar and toasted oatmeal, balanced by a firm roasted bitterness. Significant depth is added by the barrel-aged portion, contributing oak tannins and vanilla. The finish is bittersweet and lingering with a refined alcohol presence and no harshness.
Mouthfeel. Very full-bodied and viscous with a chewy, velvety texture enhanced by flaked oatmeal. Carbonation is low to moderate. A smooth, noticeable alcohol warmth is present, appropriate for its high gravity, without being hot or solventy.
