This Export Stout captures the essence of a classic Foreign Extra Stout, balancing rich intensity with approachable drinkability. Deep layers of freshly brewed black coffee and dark chocolate dominate the palate, supported by nuanced sensory cues of toasted bread crust and aged tobacco. The malt profile is substantial yet carefully balanced, avoiding being overly sweet or bone-dry. Traditional English hops provide a clean, earthy bitterness that cuts through the roasted depth without overwhelming the delicate fermentation esters. With its smooth, medium-full body and refined finish, this award-winning ale offers a complex sensory journey that remains true to the heritage of British dark beers.
Appearance. Very deep, dark brown to jet black in color (SRM 35-40). Opaque in the glass with a thick, persistent tan head that leaves significant lacing as it recedes.
Aroma. High aroma intensity led by prominent roasted grains, specifically freshly brewed black coffee and bittersweet chocolate. Subtle secondary notes of tobacco and toasted bread crust emerge alongside a faint, dark fruit ester. A low, earthy English hop character provides a traditional floral counterpoint.
Taste. Initial flavors of deep roasted malt bring forward dark chocolate and espresso without a sharp, acrid bite. A mid-palate complexity of toasted bread and dried tobacco leads into a firm, earthy bitterness from English hops. The finish is moderately dry and clean, leaving a lingering impression of cocoa and roasted grain.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a smooth, slightly creamy texture. Carbonation is moderate to moderately-high, providing enough lift to prevent the heavy roasted malts from feeling cloying. A very subtle, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present.
