A single bottle of our Imperial Brown Stout, brewed from an 1856 Barclay Perkins recipe.
This is the stout that eventually became known as the Russian Imperial Stout – and more specifically, the base for Courage RIS, a beer that carried London’s brewing legacy through to the 1990s. We’ve revived the original form, not as a recreation, but as a continuation.

Smooth and rounded, not aggressive – even at 9.6% ABV. Cocoa on the nose, followed by cream, chocolate, dark fruit, and a touch of plum and sour berry. The finish is long, with herbal bitterness and just enough light roast to hold it all together.

A recipe from the Barclay Perkins archive. The Imperial Brown Stouts developed into what became known as the Russian Imperial Stouts, and this particular recipe developed into the Courage RIS, which is most notable because a) it was an excellent beer, and b) it continued to be produced until 1992, as the only surviving link to a certain brewing tradition that was huge in London, and made London famous, for over 200 years. And of course, a tradition which is now dead here.
This is not a beast of a beer, despite the abv. It is round and smooth. Gentle. Well behaved. You could introduce it happily to your mother-in-law. All cream and chocolate after the cocoa aroma, then leading to dark fruits, dried fruits, raisin, fig, prune. Even plum. Some sour berries. And the longest finish of herbal bitterness, with hints of lightly roasted coffee.

This Imperial Brown Stout is based on a historical recipe from the Barclay Perkins archive. It’s the style that would eventually evolve into the Russian Imperial Stout, and this particular version became the basis for the Courage RIS – one of the last remaining links to a once-vital London brewing tradition. That lineage ended in 1992. We brew this beer in homage to that legacy.

Don’t be fooled by the 9.6% ABV – this isn’t a brute. Instead, it’s smooth and rounded, with a soft texture and depth that builds. Aromas of cocoa lead into flavours of cream, dark chocolate, and dried fruit. There’s plum, a touch of sour berry, and a long, satisfying finish of herbal bitterness and lightly roasted coffee.

Despite it's name, the Imperial Brown Stout is black, not brown. Words meant different things in those days.
The Kernel's Imperial Brown Stout is deceptive, in that it is not a beast of a beer, despite the ABV. Rather you can expect a round and smooth mouthfeel.
With notes of cream and chocolate after the cocoa aroma, then leading to dark fruits, dried fruits, plum and some sour berries. It all finishes with a long dose of herbal bitterness, with hints of lightly roasted coffee.
