The Kernel Export India Porter

Porter 5.7 º 60 IBU
The Kernel Export India Porter bridges historical lineage with contemporary craft sensibility. It presents as a refined American Porter, evolving from an 1855 Barclay Perkins recipe toward a more hop-forward profile. Expect a foundational base of chocolate and crystal malts that provides a deep, cocoa-driven richness and light coffee notes. The brewery’s signature late-kettle and dry-hopping techniques introduce a vibrant aromatic layer of citrus, fresh grass, and delicate rose petals. While the initial impression is one of dark chocolate indulgence and fruity brightness, the experience transitions into a resolutely dry and bitter finish, showcasing a clean, modern hop expression against a classic dark grain bill.
Appearance. Very dark brown to black in color (35-40 SRM). Opaque in the glass with a thick, creamy beige head that exhibits excellent retention and leaves consistent lacing.
Aroma. Moderate to high intensity. Dominated by sweet chocolate and toasted cocoa bean aromas supported by light roasted coffee. The hop character is pronounced and fresh, offering distinctive notes of citrus zest, cut grass, and floral rose petals. Very low fruity esters; no sharp or acrid roast.
Taste. The palate opens with moderately strong dark chocolate and a hint of berry-like fruity sweetness. Mid-palate reveals subtle toffee and nutty crystal malt depth. Bitterness is firm and assertive, cutting through the malt richness. Hop flavors mirror the aroma with citrus and resinous tones. Finishes very dry and clean with a lingering, pleasant roasted bitterness and cocoa aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium to medium-full body with a creamy, smooth texture. Carbonation is moderate. Displays a very light, well-integrated alcohol warmth at 5.7% ABV. Minimal dark malt astringency.
Sensory Profile. 12345Alcohol WarmthBodyBitternessSweetnessFruitiness

A historical porter reimagined with modern hops - this batch features Talus.

The Kernel's Export India Porter is inspired by mid-19th century recipes from Barclay Perkins and Whitbread - beers originally brewed for export to British servicemen stationed in India.

Using insights from the Durden Park Beer Circle’s Old British Beers and How To Make Them, they’ve adapted those classic recipes for modern palates.

Expect layers of roast coffee and dark chocolate, underpinned by a firm malt base and lively carbonation. Hop character varies but typically brings a vivid counterpoint — from resinous pine and citrus peel to berry and spice — depending on the batch.

They’ve softened the sharp edge of traditional black malts with additions of chocolate and crystal malt, enriching the body and mouthfeel while maintaining a roasted backbone. The beer is generously late-hopped and dry-hopped like their Pale Ales and IPAs - typically with American varieties for bold citrus and fruit character, but occasionally using British hops like Bramling Cross for more traditional depth.

Each batch varies slightly, but the result is a deeply coloured, highly carbonated porter with notes of coffee, cocoa, and dark fruit, lifted by hop brightness and a refreshing finish.
