The Durham Brewery Sumerian

Sumerian is a powerful, high-gravity interpretation of a Weissbier, pouring a hazy gold with a persistent, moussy white head. The aroma is a complex alchemy of ancient Mesopotamian spices, weaving through dominant notes of ripe banana and clove. Local Humble Bee honey and rich dates add a luscious, dark-fruit depth that complements the bready, doughy wheat base. Often described as liquid banana bread, the palate offers a harmonious blend of honeyed sweetness and spicy phenols, balanced by a soft bitterness. At 8.4% ABV, it concludes with a smooth, warming finish that highlights the beer’s celebratory, historic character.
Appearance. Deep gold to light amber in color (6-8 SRM); features a very thick, moussy, and long-lasting white head with excellent lacing. It is distinctly hazy with a visible shine from the high wheat content and yeast in suspension.
Aroma. High intensity with a complex profile of esters and phenols; strong banana and clove notes are primary. These are layered with the floral sweetness of Humble Bee honey, the rich scent of dates, and a unique alchemy of Mesopotamian spices. A bready, doughy wheat malt character provides the backbone.
Taste. An initial impression of liquid banana bread with moderately strong banana and clove flavors. The palate is enriched by the soft, grainy sweetness of wheat malt, Humble Bee honey, and the dark fruit character of dates. Bitterness is low, allowing a well-rounded, flavorful sweetness to lead into a warming, relatively dry finish.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a fluffy, creamy fullness that is more substantial than a standard wheat beer. High carbonation provides an effervescent, spritzy quality. A noticeable but well-integrated alcohol warmth is present due to the 8.4% ABV.
