The Drowned Lands Brewery

This American Stout presents a luxurious sensory experience, beginning with a robust foundation of Maris Otter that supports a complex layer of light and dark crystal, chocolate, and black malts. The initial impact is one of deep bittersweet chocolate and roasted coffee beans, seamlessly integrated with the unmistakable influence of Black Dirt Distillery bourbon barrels. Expect fragrant notes of charred oak, vanilla, and warm spirits to envelop the palate. While fermented clean to highlight the malty depths, the high ABV provides a comforting warmth, making it an ideal companion for cold winter nights. The balance is firm yet sophisticated, favoring roasted depth over aggressive hopping.

Appearance. Jet black (40+ SRM) and completely opaque. It supports a large, creamy, and persistent dark tan head with excellent lacing.

Aroma. High intensity; dominant notes of dark chocolate, espresso, and toasted bread from the Maris Otter base. The barrel aging contributes significant bourbon, vanilla, and oak aromatics. Hop character is low, offering just a hint of resin. Esters are very low due to the clean fermentation.

Taste. Deeply roasted flavors of coffee and dark chocolate lead, followed by the rich, sweet caramel of crystal malts. The bourbon barrel influence provides a complex layer of vanilla and toasted oak. Bitterness is medium-high, providing a firm counterpoint to the malt richness. The finish is long and warming with a lingering cocoa and spirit character.

Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and exceptionally creamy with a velvety texture. Carbonation is moderate. A significant but smooth alcohol warmth is present, reflecting the 10.5% ABV without being harsh or fusel.
