The Bruery Thr3e (2024)

This massive Imperial Barleywine exemplifies The Bruery’s penchant for intensity, presenting a sensory profile significantly amplified by its 15.9% ABV and bourbon barrel maturation. A dense malt foundation of toasted bread and deep caramel interacts with assertive, resinous American hop character. The extended wood aging imparts powerful layers of charred oak, vanilla, and spicy bourbon that weave through the rich, chewy palate. While the sweetness is substantial, a firm bitterness provides essential structure, leading into a long, warming finish filled with dried fruit esters and a lingering spirit-like complexity. It is a viscous, contemplative ale designed for slow sipping.
Appearance. Deep copper to tawny brown with distinct ruby highlights. Pours with a moderately low, light tan head that recedes quickly to a fine collar, leaving noticeable legs on the glass due to the high alcohol content. Clarity is good despite the depth of color.
Aroma. High intensity with a complex blend of rich caramel and toasted malt richness. Assertive hop aromas of citrus and pine are present, though partially tempered by heavy bourbon barrel notes of vanilla, toasted oak, and coconut. Moderate dark fruit esters and a significant, smooth alcohol presence are prominent.
Taste. Initial impression is intensely malty and sweet, followed quickly by aggressive hop bitterness. Flavors of rich caramel, toffee, and toasted grains are layered with resinous hop notes. The mid-palate reveals bourbon-soaked oak and vanilla, with low to moderate esters of plum and raisin. The finish is long and warming, balancing residual malty sweetness with a firm, lingering bitterness.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and exceptionally viscous with a chewy, velvety texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A significant, smooth alcohol warmth is present but remains well-integrated, avoiding harshness. Very low astringency despite the heavy barrel influence.
