The sensory experience is defined by a dense, layered complexity of caramelized sugars and dark fruit. Intensely aromatic, it offers deep waves of toffee, caramel, and dark fruit leather, punctuated by the refined oak and vanilla of the bourbon barrels. The palate reveals luscious notes of sun-dried raisin and vinous maturity, characteristic of its long oxidation. Despite its staggering strength, it remains remarkably smooth, finishing with a sophisticated dryness that balances the rich, robust malt profile.
Appearance. Deep reddish-brown to dark mahogany (22+ SRM); very dark and nearly opaque. Pours with a thin, light tan head that dissipates quickly due to high alcohol content, leaving minimal lacing.
Aroma. High intensity. Dominated by rich malt sweetness including molasses, treacle, and burnt toffee. Pronounced bourbon barrel character contributes vanilla, charred oak, and a hint of coconut. Heavy dark fruit esters of raisin, fig, and prune. Significant alcoholic strength is evident but clean, with subtle oxidation notes of sherry and leather. No hop aroma.
Taste. The initial impression is a massive wave of malty complexity, featuring rich caramel, toffee, and dark fruit leather. Mid-palate introduces bourbon-soaked oak and vanilla. Hop bitterness is low to moderate, providing just enough structure to prevent cloying sweetness. The finish is surprisingly dry for the ABV, showing vinous, sherry-like oxidation and a lingering warmth. Complex and deeply layered.
Mouthfeel. Full, viscous, and chewy body. Carbonation is low, enhancing the beer's sipper-like quality. Significant alcohol warmth is present and throat-coating, reflecting the 17.3% ABV. Smooth, with a slight tannic dryness from the extensive wood aging.
