The Bruery Mélange à Quad

This massive Belgian Dark Strong Ale is a masterclass in blending, reaching a potent 18.5% ABV through a complex marriage of base beers and four distinct wood treatments. Layers of Brandy and Cognac barrels impart elegant vinous notes and distilled spirit character, while Bourbon barrels contribute rich vanilla and toasted oak. The inclusion of the legendary Black Tuesday base adds depth with whispers of dark chocolate, grounding the intense dark fruit esters of the Belgian yeast. Expect a luxurious profile of raisins, figs, and burnt sugar, finishing with the nutty, oxidized complexity of Madeira and a sophisticated, lingering alcohol warmth.
Appearance. Deep mahogany to dark ebony in color (SRM 35+), appearing nearly opaque in the glass. The head is a thin, creamy tan collar with limited retention due to high alcohol content, leaving viscous, oily legs (tears) on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity and extraordinarily complex. Leading with rich aromas of raisins, dried plums, and figs, followed by significant barrel-derived notes of vanilla, toasted oak, and spicy brandy. Distinctive vinous notes of Cognac and the nutty, toffee-like oxidation of Madeira are evident. Alcohol is prominent but sweet and perfumy rather than solventy.
Taste. Initial impression is a wave of decadent malt sweetness featuring burnt sugar, caramel, and dark fruit. The mid-palate reveals the barrel influence: spicy bourbon oak, vanilla, and dark cherry from the brandy. Hop bitterness is low, providing just enough structure against the massive malt weight. The finish is long and warming, showing deep complexity from the Black Tuesday influence with hints of cocoa and molasses, ending with a lingering, sweet, and spirited aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and viscous with a rich, velvety texture. Carbonation is low to moderate, enhancing the beer's creamy mouth-coating quality. Alcohol warmth is significant and chest-warming but remains smooth given the extreme gravity. No astringency from the wood.
