Appearance. Jet black and opaque (SRM 40+). Pours with a thin, deep tan head that shows low retention due to the high alcohol content. Highly viscous with prominent legs visible on the glass when swirled.
Aroma. Intense and complex with a rich blend of roasted malts, espresso, and bittersweet chocolate. The bourbon barrel contributes strong notes of oak, caramel, and coconut. The Madagascar and Tahitian vanilla beans offer floral and creamy sweetness, while cinnamon and anise provide a spicy, black licorice-like character. Low dark fruit esters of plum and prune are present beneath the spice.
Taste. An initial impression of massive sweetness and rich roastiness. Flavors of burnt grain and dark cocoa are immediately followed by spicy cinnamon and herbal anise. The dual vanilla varieties create a velvety mid-palate that balances the moderately high hop and roast bitterness. The finish is long and warming, featuring lingering notes of bourbon-soaked oak, vanilla, and a hint of spicy phenols.
Mouthfeel. Full to very full-bodied with a thick, chewy, and syrupy texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A significant, smooth alcohol warmth is present, though it remains well-integrated without being harsh or solventy. Creamy and mouth-coating.
