Forgotten Lore is a monumental Imperial Stout that showcases the intense synergy between the Black Tuesday base and double oak rye barrels. The sensory experience begins with a decadent aroma of chocolate pudding and crusty bread, supported by a significant rye malt presence. The double oak aging introduces nuanced layers of toasted oak and dried white flowers, while the fruit profile leans into concentrated dried berries. At an exceptional 21.5% ABV, the beer delivers a profound, velvety warmth that integrates seamlessly with its viscous, chewy texture. It is a masterclass in high-gravity brewing, balancing massive malt weight with spicy rye whiskey complexity.
Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque. It pours with a thick, deep tan head that shows low to moderate retention due to high alcohol concentration. Significant viscosity is evident through thick legs coating the glass.
Aroma. High intensity with a rich blend of bittersweet chocolate, cocoa, and toasted bread. Prominent rye whiskey notes provide a spicy counterpoint to dark fruit esters of raisin and dried berries. Subtle floral notes of dried white flowers mingle with toasted oak, vanilla, and a clean, spirit-like alcohol presence.
Taste. An initial explosion of chocolate pudding and dark caramel is met by aggressive rye malt spiciness and peppery oak. Medium-high bitterness is present but remains balanced by the immense malt sweetness and high residual extract. Flavors of dried berries and black currants emerge in the mid-palate, leading to a long, lingering finish of toasted grain, dark chocolate, and luxurious alcohol warmth.
Mouthfeel. Very full-bodied, viscous, and chewy with a luscious, velvety texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A strong, smooth alcohol warmth is persistent but well-integrated, lacking any sharp or solventy harshness.
