This formidable Imperial Stout offers a masterclass in barrel integration, emerging from Port barrels that formerly held Balcones whisky with an opulent sensory profile. Deep aromas of viscous molasses and earthy pumpernickel are punctuated by concentrated dried plums and a hint of toasted wheat bread. On the palate, a luxurious wave of dark chocolate melds with the spicy, vanillin-rich character of toasted oak and single malt whisky. At nearly fifteen percent alcohol, the warmth is profound yet velvety, supporting a complex finish of dark fruit and charred grain. It is a dense, contemplative beer with exceptional depth and a luscious, lingering sweetness.
Appearance. Jet black and opaque (SRM 40+). Pours with a thick, creamy, deep tan head that shows moderate retention, leaving oily legs on the glass as the high alcohol and viscosity cling to the surface.
Aroma. High intensity; heavy notes of bittersweet dark chocolate and molasses-soaked pumpernickel. Strong vinous esters of dried plums and raisins mingle with charred oak and the subtle spirituous character of Balcones whisky barrels. Low toasty maltiness and a hint of toasted wheat bread underlie the complexity.
Taste. Bold initial impression of dark chocolate and toasted wheat bread, transitioning into rich, port-like sweetness and dark fruit flavors. The mid-palate reveals toasted oak and a hint of earthy spice. Bitterness is firm but well-balanced by a massive malt backbone and residual sugars. The finish is long and lingering with notes of roast and dried fruit.
Mouthfeel. Very full-bodied and exceptionally chewy with a velvety, luscious texture. Carbonation is low, emphasizing the syrupy viscosity. A significant, smooth alcohol warmth is present and noticeable, yet well-integrated for its strength.
