The Bruery Double Mash

This monumental English Barleywine commands attention with its staggering depth and viscosity. A luxurious aromatic profile of toasted caramel and dark, dried figs leads the way, supported by the lush scent of over-ripe pome fruit. Extensive bourbon barrel aging introduces sophisticated layers of vanillin and charred oak, weaving seamlessly into the base beer's massive malt foundation. The high gravity results in a decadent, velvet-like texture that coats the palate with waves of toffee and stone fruit, finishing with a resolute, well-integrated warmth. It is a slow-sipping masterpiece that balances the intensity of English malt tradition with modern barrel-driven complexity.
Appearance. Deep mahogany to dark brown (20-22 SRM) with brilliant clarity and noticeable ruby highlights. It pours with a low, tan-colored head that exhibits poor retention, common for the style and strength, leaving significant legs on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity with a complex, strongly malty character featuring toasted caramel, toffee, and bread crust. Pronounced esters of dried figs and raisins are complemented by over-ripe pome fruit. Prominent bourbon barrel notes of vanilla and toasted oak are well-integrated with a soft, rounded alcohol presence.
Taste. A rich, multi-layered malt sweetness dominates the initial impression, offering flavors of toasted caramel and English toffee. Mid-palate presents deep fruitiness, specifically dried figs and baked apple. The hop bitterness is moderate but perceived as mild against the massive malt backbone. The finish is moderately sweet and lingering with sophisticated notes of oak, vanilla, and a hint of sherry-like oxidation.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and exceptionally chewy with a viscous, velvety texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A significant but smooth alcohol warmth is present, providing a soothing sensation without being harsh or fusel.
