The Bruery

This massive Imperial Stout radiates a commanding presence, shaped by twenty-four months of maturation in premium Rye barrels. The sensory profile is defined by a decadent fusion of bittersweet chocolate and espresso maltiness, seamlessly entwined with the distinct spicy pepper and clove-like character of the rye wood. Deep layers of black cherry, dried fig, and vanilla bean emerge through the viscous texture, while the 20.2% ABV provides a bold, vinous warmth. It is an exercise in intensity, where the charred oak tannins from the Rye barrels provide a structural counterpoint to the beer’s inherent velvet-like sweetness and dark fruit esters.

Appearance. SRM 40+; jet black and opaque. Pours with significant viscosity. A thin, dark tan head forms briefly with low retention due to high alcohol, leaving prominent legs (tears) on the glass.

Aroma. High intensity; rich blend of bittersweet chocolate, roasted coffee, and charred oak. Distinctive rye spice and black pepper notes from the barrels meld with vanilla and dark fruit esters of prune and raisin. Smooth but very strong alcohol presence.

Taste. Initial impression is intensely malty and sweet, followed by layers of cocoa, burnt grain, and caramel. The Rye barrel influence provides a sharp, spicy counterpoint of pepper and sandalwood. Firm bitterness is present but masked by the massive extract. The finish is lingering, sweet, and complex with a warming, port-like aftertaste.

Mouthfeel. Very full-bodied and chewy with a thick, velvety, and luscious texture. Low carbonation. Significant and persistent alcohol warmth is present but remains smooth rather than sharp.
