This opulent English Barley Wine represents a masterclass in barrel blending, emerging from a curated selection of Old Fitzgerald, Elijah Craig, and Heaven Hill bourbon casks. It pours a deep mahogany with visible viscosity, offering an intense aromatic profile of rich toffee and dark dried fruits. The palate is a complex landscape where the base beer's biscuit and caramel malts collide with the spirituous influence of the wood, revealing layers of smooth vanilla, toasted oak, and a hint of smoky spice. At 12% ABV, the warmth is profound yet velvety, leading into a lingering finish defined by decadent caramel and rounded bourbon character.
Appearance. Deep mahogany to dark brown with ruby highlights; brilliant clarity despite its depth. Small, fine-beaded tan head with modest retention. Significant viscosity is apparent as thick legs coating the glass upon swirling.
Aroma. High intensity. A heavy foundation of rich caramel and dark toffee malt is layered with dried figs and raisins. The barrel aging contributes distinct notes of toasted oak, spicy bourbon, and sweet vanilla. Low earthy hop notes are present but secondary to the complex spirit and malt character.
Taste. Initial impression is of intense, multi-layered malty sweetness featuring treacle and dark fruit. Mid-palate introduces charred oak, warm spice, and smooth bourbon from the casks. Moderate bitterness provides balance against the heavy residual sugars. The finish is long and warming, with lingering notes of vanilla and tobacco.
