Smokescreen is a formidable Imperial Stout that marries the deep, roasted intensity of a classic stout with the bracing, medicinal character of Islay scotch barrels. The sensory experience begins with an assertive wave of peat smoke, sea salt, and charred oak, seamlessly integrated into a decadent base of dark chocolate, espresso, and black licorice. As the liquid warms, notes of dried figs and raisins emerge alongside a robust alcoholic heat that reflects its 11.4% ABV. This is a complex, slow-sipping beer where the coastal, smoky nuances of the barrel aging redefine the traditional roasted bitterness, resulting in a harmonious yet intense profile.
Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque. Pours with a thick, deep tan head that shows moderate retention and leaves significant lacing on the glass. High viscosity is evident through visible legs when swirled.
Aroma. High intensity with a dominant Islay barrel character featuring peat smoke, iodine, and medicinal phenols. Beneath the smoke lies a rich foundation of bittersweet chocolate, heavy roast, and toasted grain, complemented by moderate dark fruit esters resembling prunes and dried currants. A noticeable, clean alcohol warmth is present.
Taste. An intense initial impression of campfire smoke and peated malt gives way to deep layers of espresso and cocoa powder. Mid-palate highlights include black cherry and licorice. The bitterness is firm and assertive, balancing a faint caramel malt sweetness. The finish is long and fairly dry, leaving a lingering aftertaste of charred wood, roasted grain, and warming spirits.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and chewy with a velvety, luscious texture. Carbonation is moderate to low, enhancing the beer's weight. A pronounced and smooth alcohol warmth is felt in the throat, without being sharp or solventy.
