Tempest’s Old Fitz is a luxurious English Barley Wine that marries traditional British pale ale and crystal malts with the distinctive influence of local heather honey and bourbon barrel maturation. At 12% ABV, it presents an opulent sensory experience defined by deep layers of toffee, treacle, and dark dried fruits. The heather honey contributes a unique floral and earthy nectar quality, while the bourbon barrels impart sophisticated notes of charred oak, vanilla, and a mellow spirituous warmth. It is a decadent, full-bodied sipper where the earthy English hop character is subtly woven into a complex tapestry of caramelized sugars and rich, vinous maturation notes.

Appearance. Deep copper to dark mahogany (20-22 SRM) with brilliant clarity and ruby highlights. It forms a low, creamy, off-white head with modest retention. High viscosity is evident as thick legs cling to the glass upon swirling.

Aroma. High intensity with a rich, complex malt profile featuring toffee, biscuit, and dark caramel. A prominent floral and herbal honeyed sweetness is layered with bourbon-derived vanilla, toasted oak, and a hint of coconut. Moderate esters of raisin and dried fig are present, alongside a very low, earthy hop aroma and smooth alcohol.

Taste. Initial impression is a massive wave of multi-layered malty sweetness, specifically treacle and toasted bread. The mid-palate introduces floral heather honey and a distinct bourbon spirit character. Medium-low bitterness provides enough structure to balance the heavy gravity. Flavors of plum, date, and vanilla lead into a long, moderately sweet finish with lingering oak tannins and a smooth, vinous aftertaste.

Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and exceptionally chewy with a velvety, luscious texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A significant but well-integrated alcohol warmth provides a soothing glow without any harsh or burning sensation.
