Brother Elijah is an opulent English Barley Wine, elevated by an intensive twenty-four-month maturation in Elijah Craig casks. The sensory journey begins with a dense tapestry of mature oak, dark molasses, and decadent caramel, seamlessly woven with the delicate, floral lift of Scottish honey. This extended aging imparts deep layers of vanilla and a sophisticated vinous complexity that complements the concentrated dried-fruit malt core. At twelve percent, it delivers a velvety, warming presence that coats the palate. The finish is remarkably smooth, balancing its high-gravity sweetness with refined woody tannins and a lingering, honeyed elegance.
Appearance. Deep mahogany with brilliant ruby highlights and visible viscosity forming legs on the glass. It features a thin, off-white head with low retention, typical for its strength and age.
Aroma. High intensity with a complex profile of rich caramel, dark molasses, and toasted toffee. Prominent notes of vanilla and charred oak from the bourbon barrels merge with floral honey. Significant dried fruit esters reminiscent of figs and raisins are present, alongside a subtle port-like oxidation and soft, well-aged alcohol.
Taste. Deeply layered malty sweetness featuring heavy caramel, biscuit, and dark treacle. The Scottish honey adds a distinctive floral complexity and smooth richness. Oak-derived vanilla and a light woodiness provide structural balance against the dried-fruit esters. Hop bitterness is low and supportive, leading to a long, sweet, and vinous finish with a sophisticated bourbon-soaked aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and exceptionally chewy with a luscious, velvety texture. Carbonation is low, enhancing the beer's weight. A pronounced yet smooth and rounded alcohol warmth is evident without any harsh burn.
