This American Stout, a festive collaboration between Tartarus and State of Kind, translates the rich, spiced character of Stollen into a robust dark ale. A deep, jet-black body is built upon a three-hour boil that intensifies the malt complexity, providing a backdrop of dark chocolate and roasted coffee. The addition of sultanas introduces a leathery, dried-fruit sweetness that interacts with festive spices to evoke holiday nostalgia. While the base style provides firm bitterness and resiny hop notes, the focus remains on the harmony between the charred malt sugars and the warming spice profile, creating a comforting, hearth-side experience.

Appearance. Jet black and opaque (SRM 40) with a large, persistent, creamy light-brown head that leaves significant lacing on the glass.

Aroma. Moderate to high intensity featuring prominent roasted coffee and bittersweet chocolate. Layered over the roast are distinct notes of cinnamon and nutmeg spices alongside the vinous, jammy scent of sultanas. Low resiny hop aroma and light dark-fruit esters are present.

Taste. Initial flavors of dark roasted grain and cocoa lead into a mid-palette of sweet sultanas and bready malt. Moderate to high bitterness from both hops and roasted barley provides a clean counterpoint to the festive spices. The finish is medium-dry with lingering notes of toasted currants and a subtle, pleasant charred character.
