Tartarus Beers

This Rum Barrel Aged American Stout presents a decadent sensory profile shaped by nine months of maturation. The initial impression is dominated by an assertive roasted malt backbone, delivering deep notes of dark chocolate and espresso. The dark rum barrels introduce complex layers of molasses, spiced oak, and a hint of vanilla, which meld seamlessly with the resinous and citrusy American hop character. At 10% ABV, the beer offers a significant but smooth warmth. It pours jet black with a persistent tan head, leading to a rich, full-bodied experience that finishes with a lingering, pleasant bitterness and a touch of charred oak.

Appearance. Jet black and opaque (SRM 40+). Features a large, persistent light brown head with excellent lacing.

Aroma. High intensity roast with prominent notes of dark chocolate and roasted coffee beans. The rum barrel aging adds complexity through aromas of molasses, vanilla, and toasted oak. Medium-low resinous and citrusy hop character with a noticeable but smooth alcohol presence.

Taste. Bold roasted flavors of bittersweet chocolate and espresso. A medium-high hop bitterness is balanced by the rich, dark sugar sweetness and spiced oak notes derived from the rum barrels. The finish is medium-dry with a lingering charred grain quality and a touch of hop resin.

Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and creamy. Carbonation is medium-high, providing a necessary lift to the dense texture. Significant but smooth alcohol warmth is present, with a very light roast-derived astringency.
