Surly Brewing Company Axe Man
A world-renowned American IPA, Axe Man showcases an intense hop profile driven by double dry-hopping with Citra and Mosaic hops. The sensory experience is led by a massive wave of tropical fruit, including mango and passionfruit, alongside bright citrus zest. This hop intensity is anchored by the use of Golden Promise malt, which provides a clean, slightly nutty, and honey-like sweetness that adds depth to the mid-palate. Despite the rich malt foundation, the beer maintains a remarkably dry and crisp finish. The result is a vibrant, aromatically-charged ale where firm bitterness and lush fruit character coexist in a clean, high-impact presentation.
Appearance. Deep gold to pale amber color. Large, persistent white head with excellent lacing. Generally clear, though a very faint hop haze may be present.
Aroma. Intense hop aroma featuring pungent tropical fruit, grapefruit, and hints of pine from the Citra and Mosaic additions. Low, clean, bready malt support. Fermentation profile is neutral and clean with no detectable esters.
Taste. Immediate impact of tropical fruit and citrus oils. The malt flavor is low but provides a sturdy, grainy, and slightly toasted base. Bitterness is medium-high and assertive, but not harsh. The balance is heavily hop-forward, leading to a very dry, clean finish with a lingering resinous aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, slightly oily texture from the heavy hopping. Carbonation is medium-high, providing a crisp bite. A very light, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present.
