Depths Below is an immersive exploration of New Zealand hop terroir, crafted as a collaboration between Sudden Death Brewing, Outer Range, and Freestyle Hops. This Double IPA focuses exclusively on the diverse expressions of Nelson Sauvin, specifically highlighting the late-harvest Nelson Bliss alongside Nelson Hop Kief and Super Sauvin. The result is an intensely tropical experience, defined by pungent gooseberry, white wine grape, and passionfruit aromas. Despite its strength, the beer maintains a remarkably creamy and delicate texture. The sophisticated hop layering provides a resinous depth that integrates seamlessly with a clean malt backbone, showcasing the vibrant, multifaceted character of high-quality Southern Hemisphere hops.
Appearance. Deep gold to light orange (7-9 SRM) with a soft, persistent, off-white head that leaves dense lacing. Features a modern, uniform haze from intensive double dry-hopping.
Aroma. Intense hop-forward bouquet dominated by Nelson Sauvin character: crushed white grapes, gooseberry, passionfruit, and a hint of resinous pine. Low, neutral, grainy-sweet malt sits far in the background, supporting a clean fermentation profile with very subtle fruity esters.
Taste. High-impact hop flavors of tropical fruit, Sauvignon Blanc-like grape skin, and zesty citrus. Bitterness is firm and assertive but lacks any harshness, balancing a soft, supportive malt foundation. The finish is medium-dry and clean, leaving a long, lingering aftertaste of tropical fruit and floral hops.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a notable creaminess and smooth texture. Carbonation is moderate. Alcohol provides a restrained, gentle warmth that is well-integrated without being solventy or hot.
