Sudden Death Brewing

This Doppelbock pays homage to Northern German traditions through a meticulous single decoction and an extended two-hour boil. The result is a profoundly malty profile defined by deep melanoidins and a rich, bready core. Intense aromas of dark fruit leather, plums, and subtle chocolate lead into a luxurious palate where dark grape and toasted crust flavors dominate. Despite its significant strength, eight weeks of lagering ensures a velvet-smooth delivery. The finish is remarkably clean for such a high-gravity lager, leaving a lingering impression of complex malt sweetness and gentle, well-integrated warmth that underscores its imposing stature.

Appearance. Deep mahogany with brilliant ruby highlights when held to the light. Crowned by a large, creamy, persistent off-white head with excellent lacing and high clarity.

Aroma. High intensity maltiness featuring rich Maillard products and deeply toasted bread. Complementary notes of dark fruit, specifically plums and dark grapes, are present. A very light chocolate-like aroma emerges, though it lacks any burnt or roasted character. Hop aroma is absent, and the fermentation profile is exceptionally clean.

Taste. Initial impression of intense malt sweetness that transitions into a complex medley of chocolate, dark fruit leather, and rich melanoidins. Bitterness is moderately low, providing just enough support to ensure the finish doesn't become cloying. The aftertaste is long and malty with a clean lager character and no harshness or astringency.

Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and viscous with a smooth, creamy texture. Carbonation is moderate. A noticeable but pleasant alcohol warmth glows in the chest, reflecting its high gravity without any sharp fusel burn.
