Suburbier Urban Brewers Fear of the Dark
This Imperial Stout is a decadent, high-density collaboration between Suburbier and Bastards. A complex blend of eight specialty malts creates a profile that is literally a dessert. Rich layers of bittersweet chocolate and dark roasted coffee dominate the palate, seamlessly integrated with creamy coconut accents. The experience is deeply indulgent, offering a robust and velvety character that emphasizes the roasted depth of the malt bill rather than hop presence. At 10% ABV, it provides a smooth, warming sensation that complements its luscious, dessert-like finish, resulting in a harmonious and intensely flavorful Imperial Stout with exceptional depth and a lingering, roasty aftertaste.
Appearance. Jet black and opaque (SRM 40+). It features a thick, dense, deep tan head with excellent retention and persistent lacing. Due to its high viscosity and alcohol content, legs are visible on the glass when swirled.
Aroma. High intensity. Dominant aromas of bittersweet chocolate, cocoa, and freshly roasted coffee beans. A distinct, sweet coconut character is present, alongside subtle dark fruit notes of plum and raisin. Very low hop aroma. The alcohol is noticeable but smooth, lacking any solventy sharpness, blending into a rich, malty sweetness.
Taste. The initial impression is intensely malty and sweet, reminiscent of a liquid dessert. Strong flavors of dark chocolate and espresso are balanced by a creamy coconut middle. Medium-high bitterness provides necessary structure against the heavy malt backbone without being harsh. The finish is long and bittersweet, leaving lingering traces of roasted grain and gentle alcohol warmth.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and viscous with a chewy, luscious, and velvety texture. Low to moderate carbonation. A gentle, smooth alcohol warmth is present throughout, contributing to the substantial mouthfeel without becoming hot or fusel.
