Suburbier Las Andanzas Del Capitan Ron

This Imperial Scotch Ale, or Wee Heavy, presents a decadent sensory journey dominated by rich, bready-toasty malts and deep caramelization. The 9.1% ABV provides a smooth, warming foundation for complex additions of sarrapia, which lends notes of vanilla and almond, and toasted coconut that enhances the beer’s creamy texture. The influence of rum and oak chips imparts sophisticated layers of spiced spirit and woody tannins, mimicking a barrel-aged character. Dark fruit esters of plum and raisin weave through the mid-palate, while the finish remains luxuriously sweet yet balanced by a gentle grainy roast and spirituous warmth, creating an indulgent, dessert-like experience.
Appearance. Deep mahogany to dark brown with ruby highlights (approx. 22 SRM). Dense, tan head with moderate retention and visible legs due to the high alcohol content. Generally clear, though oils from the coconut may provide a faint, attractive sheen.
Aroma. High intensity with a core of rich, caramelized sugars, toffee, and toasted breadcrumbs. The sarrapia adds a prominent layer of vanilla and marzipan, while coconut contributes a tropical creaminess. Supporting notes of dark rum and subtle, woody oak tannins are evident. Esters of dried plums and dark cherries are present, with a noticeable but well-integrated alcohol presence.
Taste. Palate-coating sweetness driven by deep caramel, treacle, and English biscuits. The coconut and sarrapia flavors are bold, offering nuances of toasted macaroon and spiced almond. Rum notes provide a boozy depth, complemented by the structured dryness of oak chips. Low hop bitterness allows the malt and adjuncts to shine. The finish is long and warming, with lingering notes of dark sugar and a hint of roasted grain.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and exceptionally chewy with a thick, creamy viscosity. Carbonation is moderate, providing enough lift to prevent cloying. A smooth, sophisticated alcohol warmth is present. Negligible astringency, though a light woody structure from the oak chips is perceptible.
