Rio Reserva is an opulent Belgian Dark Strong Ale that masterfully bridges the gap between a classic Quad and sophisticated barrel aging. Pouring a unique dark golden to deep amber, it offers a profound sensory journey defined by its time in Kentucky Bourbon barrels. The nose is a decadent tapestry of dark fruits like figs and dates, intertwined with noble vanilla and soft roasted notes imparted by the oak. On the palate, the 10.5% ABV is exceptionally well-integrated, providing a smooth warmth that carries flavors of caramelized sugar, toasted malt, and a delicate woody complexity. The finish is refined and lingering, reflecting meticulous bottle conditioning.
Appearance. SRM 12–22; deep amber to dark copper with golden highlights. Features a huge, dense, moussy, and persistent cream-colored head with excellent lacing. Generally clear, though a faint haze may be present from bottle conditioning.
Aroma. High intensity with a complex mix of rich, bready-toasty malt and dark caramel. Prominent esters of raisins, dried plums, and figs are complemented by spicy phenols and distinct notes of noble vanilla and soft toasted oak from the Bourbon barrels. Alcohol is soft and perfumy.
Taste. Rich and complex maltiness with flavors of toasted bread and dark caramel. Deep fruit esters of plum and cherry blend with spicy yeast character. The Kentucky Bourbon barrels contribute a soft roast quality and elegant vanilla sweetness. Moderate bitterness provides balance against the malt and alcohol. The finish is moderately dry with lingering notes of dark fruit and oaky tannins.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a creamy, luxurious texture. High carbonation that remains smooth rather than sharp. Noticeable but well-integrated alcohol warmth without being hot or solvent-like. Low astringency from oak aging.
