This aged Belgian Dark Strong Ale presents a masterclass in barrel integration, having spent three years in Château Haut Breton Larigaudière red wine barrels. The result is a profound sensory journey where the base beer’s rich caramel and fine chocolate notes intertwine with the vinous elegance of Margaux. Deep aromas of black cherries and forest berries are heightened by spicy yeast phenols and a whisper of toasted nuts. On the palate, the complexity deepens with layers of dark fruit, soft vanilla, and refined wood tannins. A subtle hint of smoke provides a unique counterpoint to the warming, velvety finish of this sophisticated quadruple.
Appearance. Dark brown color (SRM 18-22) with a huge, dense, frothy, persistent beige head. The liquid appears clear with deep ruby highlights when held to the light.
Aroma. High intensity and complex; a rich blend of bready-toasty malt and deep caramel. Strong red wine bouquet with prominent notes of black cherries, berries, and vanilla. Spicy yeast-derived phenols like black pepper are present alongside a soft, perfumy alcohol warmth and a faint hint of wood smoke.
Taste. Rich, complex maltiness featuring caramel, fine chocolate, and toasted nuts. Strong ester character of plums and figs is enhanced by the red wine barrel influence of black cherries and berries. Medium-low bitterness provides balance to the malt sweetness. The finish is moderately dry with refined wood tannins and lingering dark fruit flavors.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a creamy, smooth texture. Carbonation is moderate, providing a gentle lift. Noticeable but smooth alcohol warmth without being hot. Light wood-derived astringency adds structure.
