Strange Brew The Wizard
This Imperial Stout pays homage to fifty years of doom metal with a sensory profile that is appropriately dark, heavy, and loud. It presents an intense aromatic display of bittersweet chocolate and espresso, underpinned by deep notes of dried figs and black currants. The palate is a massive wall of roasted grains, offering flavors of charred toast and black licorice that crash against a firm hop bitterness. A velvety, full-bodied mouthfeel carries the 9.2% ABV with a smooth, integrated warmth, finishing with a lingering, resinous depth. Like the music that inspired it, the experience is complex, brooding, and profoundly resonant.
Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque (SRM 40). It supports a thick, persistent deep tan head with moderate lacing. The high viscosity and alcohol content are visible as prominent legs on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity with a rich blend of bittersweet chocolate, espresso, and black licorice. Moderate esters of dark fruit, specifically plums and raisins, are present. Low earthy hop character and a smooth, integrated alcohol warmth.
Taste. Initial impression is of intense roasted malt, featuring coffee and cocoa powder. Mid-palate introduces dried fruit complexity and a hint of caramel sweetness. Firm hop bitterness balances the malt depth, leading to a long finish of roasted grain and resinous hops.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and chewy with a velvety, luscious texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A gentle, smooth alcohol warmth is noticeable but well-integrated, providing a background character without sharpness.
