Stone Brewing

This Berliner Weisse is a vibrant, modern interpretation of the German classic, offering a sharp, clean lactic sourness. It pours with a bright, sparkling character, releasing a complex bouquet of lemon and tart rhubarb. The use of Huell Melon and Callista hops introduces distinctive notes of ripe melon and gooseberry, elevating the traditional bready wheat profile. Though slightly stronger than historical versions at 4.7% ABV, it remains incredibly refreshing with a crisp, bone-dry finish. The interplay between the zingy acidity and the delicate fruit esters makes this an iconoclastic, thirst-quenching summer ale that honors traditional fermentation techniques.

Appearance. Straw to very pale yellow (2-3 SRM). Features a large, dense white head with poor retention due to high acidity. Brilliant clarity and highly effervescent with rapid carbonation.

Aroma. Moderate to high intensity of clean lactic sourness dominates. A bright fruitiness is present, characterized by lemon zest and tart apple, complemented by distinctive notes of honeydew melon and gooseberry from the specialty hops. A light, doughy, raw wheat malt backbone provides a sourdough-like foundation without any hop bitterness or funk.

Taste. Initial impression is a sharp, clean lactic acidity that is refreshing and dominant. A complementary bready and grainy wheat flavor provides a subtle malt base. Hop flavors of green melon and citrus are noticeable but bitterness is undetectable, as the sourness provides the primary balance. The finish is very dry and crisp with lingering notes of tart rhubarb and lemon.

Mouthfeel. Light-bodied but with a soft wheat texture that prevents it from feeling thin. Very high carbonation creates a sparkling, spritzy mouthfeel. Features a crisp, refreshing acidity with a very subtle hint of alcohol warmth characteristic of its slightly elevated strength.
