This Imperial Stout is a massive, jet-black ale that pours with the viscosity of Siberian crude, reflecting its historical inspiration. Appearance. Opaque jet black (SRM 40) with a thick, dense, deep tan head. Excellent retention with prominent legs visible on the glass due to high alcohol concentration and viscosity.
Aroma. High intensity. Bold aromas of roasted coffee beans and dark cocoa are layered with dark fruit esters reminiscent of black currants and prunes. Significant notes of anise and black licorice combine with a refined, vinous alcohol presence.
Taste. Initial impression is of intense bittersweet chocolate and espresso. Mid-palate reveals complex dark fruit flavors and a spicy anise character. Firm bitterness balances the massive malt backbone. The finish is long and roasty with a lingering, smooth warmth.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and exceptionally chewy with a luscious, velvety texture. Carbonation is moderate. A noticeable but smooth alcohol warmth spreads across the palate without being sharp or solventy.
