This massive Imperial Stout delivers an intense sensory experience, defined by its 13% strength and a complex grist. The Golden Promise base provides a sturdy foundation for layers of dark chocolate from pale chocolate malt and roasted coffee notes from carafa type one. English caramalt and golden naked oats create a luxurious, velvety texture enhanced by the creamy sweetness of lactose. Hop bitterness from Columbus, Tomahawk, and Zeus provides a necessary counterpoint to the rich, decadent body. Expect deep aromas of vanilla and oak from barrel aging, alongside dark fruit esters and a lingering, bittersweet warmth that rounds out the indulgent finish.
Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque (40+ SRM). It pours with a dense, persistent deep tan head that leaves thick lacing on the glass. Pronounced viscosity is evident in the heavy legs that form upon swirling.
Aroma. High intensity with a rich blend of bittersweet chocolate, espresso, and burnt grain. Prominent notes of vanilla, toasted oak, and bourbon-soaked fruit. Moderate esters suggest black cherries and raisins. Low hop earthiness is detectable beneath the dominant malt profile.
Taste. Deeply complex with an initial wave of creamy milk chocolate and caramel sweetness. Mid-palate reveals roasted coffee, toasted nuts, and dark berry flavors. Bitterness is firm but well-integrated, balancing the residual sugars and lactose. The finish is long and warming, showing charred oak and a clean, sophisticated alcohol presence.
Mouthfeel. Very full-bodied and chewy with a luscious, velvety texture. Carbonation is low to moderate, enhancing the beer's substantial weight. Significant, smooth alcohol warmth is present and noticeable as a background character.
