Phase II is a vibrant New Zealand Double IPA that balances power with a soft and juicy delivery. This expression prominently features Nectaron and Superdelic hops, creating an aromatic profile saturated with ripe tropical fruit, zesty lime, and unique red fruit accents. On the palate, the Nectaron contributes intense stone fruit and passionfruit notes, while Superdelic adds a candy-like berry depth. Despite the 8.4% ABV, the beer maintains high drinkability with a smooth, refined bitterness and a neutral malt backbone that allows the Southern Hemisphere hop character to dominate. It finishes clean with a lingering, resinous fruit brightness.
Appearance. Deep gold to light orange (7-9 SRM). Pours with a slight, persistent haze characteristic of modern interpretations. Moderate-sized, creamy off-white head with excellent retention and significant lacing.
Aroma. High intensity. Dominated by Nectaron’s tropical punch of pineapple and passionfruit, layered with Superdelic’s distinct red berry, candy, and lime zest. Supportive, clean, cracker-like malt in the background. Fermentation profile is neutral with very low fruity esters.
Taste. Initial impression is a punch of tropical fruit and lime. Mid-palate reveals stone fruit and red currant nuances. Bitterness is firm and moderately high but lacks any harshness. Low, supportive malt provides a clean, soft character. Finish is medium-dry with a long, fruity, and resinous aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, soft texture. Carbonation is medium-high. Restrained, smooth alcohol warmth is present but well-integrated without being solventy. No hop-derived astringency.
