This Double IPA is a vibrant showcase of New Zealand terroir, driven by a potent trio of Nelson Sauvin, Motueka, and Rakau hops. The sensory profile opens with intense aromas of crushed white grapes and gooseberry from the Nelson Sauvin, complemented by the distinctive lime zest and mojito-like brightness of Motueka. Layers of ripe apricot and stone fruit emerge via the Rakau, supported by a clean, minimalist malt backbone. On the palate, a firm but smooth bitterness balances the lush tropical and citrus flavors, finishing dry with a lingering resinous quality. At 8% ABV, it delivers a well-integrated warmth that enhances its bold, modern hop character.
Appearance. Gold to light copper (7-9 SRM). Pours with a moderate-sized, persistent, off-white head with excellent lacing. Clarity is clear to slightly hazy, reflecting modern production techniques.
Aroma. Intense hop aroma featuring heavy notes of white wine, gooseberry, and tropical passionfruit. Bright lime, citrus peel, and faint floral spice are layered with ripe orchard fruits and apricot. Malt is low and neutral, presenting as light cracker or grainy sweetness. Fermentation is clean with very low esters.
Taste. Initial impression is an explosion of New Zealand hop character—specifically lime, white grape, and stone fruit. Malt flavor is low, providing a soft, bready support without caramel distraction. Bitterness is high and firm but lacks harshness, transitioning into a dry, crisp finish. The aftertaste lingers with a mixture of resinous pine and tropical fruit oils.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, slightly creamy texture. Carbonation is medium-high, providing a lively prickle on the tongue. A gentle, well-restrained alcohol warmth is present, commensurate with its strength, without any astringency.
