This massive Imperial Porter exudes sophistication, having matured for nearly three years in a blend of brandy and whisky barrels. The sensory profile is dominated by deep layers of dark chocolate, espresso, and caramelized sugar, elevated by the refined spirituous warmth of the wood. Brandy-soaked raisins and vanillins from the whisky casks weave through a robust malt backbone, while the extended aging rounds out any sharp roasted edges into a velvety, decadent experience. While based on the American Porter style, its immense scale and barrel integration create a complex tapestry of dried dark fruits, oak tannin, and lingering cocoa.
Appearance. Very dark brown to black (40 SRM) with garnet highlights when held to the light. Features a dense, creamy, tan-to-mocha head with moderate retention and significant lacing.
Aroma. High intensity aroma of roasted malt, dark chocolate, and espresso. Distinctive barrel notes of toasted oak, vanilla, and sweet brandy are prominent, complemented by dark fruit esters such as fig and prune.
Taste. Initial impression is rich and decadent, featuring baker’s chocolate and molasses. Deep malt complexity is supported by toasted wood and a distinct whisky warmth. The medium-high bitterness is well-integrated, balanced by the residual sweetness of the brandy barrels. The finish is exceptionally long and smooth, providing lingering notes of cocoa powder and spirituous oak.
Mouthfeel. Full and viscous body with a mouth-coating, creamy texture. Carbonation is moderate-low. Significant but well-integrated alcohol warmth is present, with very low astringency despite the extended wood contact.
