Gauntlet is a monumental Imperial Stout that commands attention through nearly two years of maturation. The influence of Pedro Ximénez Sherry-seasoned whisky and brandy barrels manifests as a lavish tapestry of sticky dates, sun-dried raisins, and dark molasses. This liquid obsidian offers an intricate interplay between bittersweet dark chocolate and the refined heat of aged spirits. The extended 23-month slumber softens the roasted edges into a smooth, vinous complexity reminiscent of vintage Port. Every sip reveals layers of charred oak, toasted vanilla, and a lingering, luxurious warmth, exemplifying a masterfully integrated, high-gravity barrel-aged masterpiece that balances intensity with profound harmony.

Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque. Pours with a thick, deep tan head that shows low to moderate retention due to high alcohol content. Heavy viscosity is evident in the thick legs that cling to the glass.

Aroma. High intensity with a complex blend of bittersweet chocolate, espresso, and black licorice. The barrel aging contributes dominant notes of dried figs, raisins, and plums alongside oak-driven vanilla and a distinct spirituous warmth from the brandy and whisky casks.

Taste. Initial impression is rich and intensely malty, featuring dark cocoa, charred grain, and caramel. The mid-palate explodes with dark fruit flavors of prune and raisin from the PX casks, balanced by a medium-high bitterness. The finish is long and warming, showing refined notes of oak, brandy, and a lingering vinous quality.

Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and exceptionally chewy with a velvety, luscious texture. Carbonation is low, enhancing the creamy mouthfeel. A smooth, gentle warmth from the 13.4% ABV is noticeable but well-integrated, without any harsh or solventy edges.
