Sofia Electric Brewing Dark Season
Dark Season is a robust take on an English Porter, amplified to a warming 8.5% ABV. The sensory journey begins with a pronounced aromatic dusting of spicy cinnamon that gradually yields to a rich, creamy vanilla bean presence as the glass warms. This sweetness is anchored by a sturdy malt backbone of dark chocolate and roasted coffee notes, typical of deep-kilned malts. While significantly stronger than a traditional version, it maintains the style's characteristic bready and toasty depth. The result is a complex, dessert-leaning ale where the spice provides a sharp contrast to the velvety vanilla and bitter cocoa finish.
Appearance. Dark brown to nearly opaque with deep ruby highlights when held to the light. Features a moderate, dense, light tan head with fair retention and light lacing.
Aroma. High intensity with dominant spicy cinnamon and sweet, creamy vanilla. A moderate bready and toasty malt character supports the adjuncts, offering layers of chocolate and faint toffee. Low earthy hop notes and moderate fruity esters of dried dark fruit are present.
Taste. The initial impression is spicy cinnamon, which quickly gives way to a smooth vanilla mid-palate. A firm malt backbone provides flavors of bitter dark chocolate and roasted coffee. Hop bitterness is medium-low, keeping the balance slightly toward the malty-sweet side. The finish is lingering and sweet with a pleasant cocoa aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a creamy, velvety texture. Carbonation is moderate. A noticeable, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present without being harsh or fusel.
