Small Gods Rose & Crown

This modern interpretation of a Best Bitter bridges historical tradition with contemporary flair. A rich, biscuity malt foundation provides a sturdy backbone for an assertive bittering addition of Admiral hops, ensuring a classic structural balance. The sensory profile is elevated by purposeful dry hopping with First Gold and Harlequin, which introduce vibrant layers of tangerine, orange marmalade, and subtle passionfruit. While leaning into modern British hop character, it maintains the high drinkability and dry finish essential to the style. The result is a harmonious, sessionable ale where toasted grain meets bright, citrusy fruitiness, symbolizing a peaceful unification of old and new world brewing techniques.
Appearance. Medium amber color (12-14 SRM) with brilliant clarity. Pours with a low, off-white head featuring moderate retention and fine lacing.
Aroma. Moderate intensity featuring a prominent bready and biscuity malt character. Hop aroma is moderate-high for the style, displaying distinct notes of tangerine zest, orange marmalade, and a light tropical touch of passionfruit. Moderate fruity esters of red apple and pear complement the hop profile.
Taste. Initial impression of toasted biscuit and light caramel malt. Bitterness is medium-high and assertive, supported by the resinous quality of Admiral hops. The mid-palate reveals layers of citrusy tangerine and zesty marmalade from First Gold and Harlequin. Fermentation esters provide a subtle fruitiness that integrates with the hops. The finish is decidedly dry and crisp with a lingering, clean hop bitterness.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth texture. Carbonation is moderate, providing a refreshing lift. No alcohol warmth is perceived, and the beer is free from astringency.

Based out of Auckland, NZ, Small Gods are a brewery dedicated to collaborative, historical and experimental brewing. Small Gods aim to brew historical styles to bring to light the weird, wonderful & rare styles that are often left on the wayside in todays intensely modern brewing scene.

This modern take on the traditional Best Bitter brings modern British hops to the fore. We took a rich and biscuity malt base and laid down an assertive bittering addition of Admiral hops. This classic base was married with dry hop additions of newcomers First Gold and Harlequin to add notes of tangerine, marmalade and passionfruit. – Notes from Small Gods Brewing.
