Small Gods Desperate Glory

Desperate Glory is a complex Oud Bruin that bridges traditional Belgian acidity with the nuance of specialty blending. A year of bourbon barrel aging imparts rich layers of oak and vanilla that intertwine with the base beer’s decadent notes of dates and brown sugar. The addition of Chinese Keemun tea introduces a delicate floral lift and a subtle undercurrent of tobacco and unsweetened cocoa, providing a sophisticated earthy counterpoint to the vibrant, funky tartness. High-gravity esters of black cherry and prune meld with a sweet-and-sour malt profile, resulting in a deep, contemplative ale with a lingering, spirit-tinged finish.
Appearance. Deep reddish-brown with mahogany highlights (approximately 22 SRM). It displays good clarity and is topped by a persistent, ivory to light tan head with average retention.
Aroma. High intensity and deeply complex. Dominant aromas of dark fruit—specifically dates, plums, and raisins—are layered over caramel and brown sugar maltiness. The bourbon barrel influence provides distinct vanilla and toasted oak, while the Chinese Keemun tea contributes unique notes of dried tobacco and a light floral perfume. A moderate lactic sourness and funky, aged character are present without acetic harshness.
Taste. An intricate sweet-and-sour balance. Initial flavors of rich caramel, dates, and sweet spice give way to a bright, funky tartness. The mid-palate reveals unsweetened cocoa and earthy tobacco from the tea, while the bourbon barrels add a creamy vanilla depth and rounded oak tannins. Hop bitterness is low and hop flavor is absent, allowing the acidity and malt to drive the structure. The finish is long and complex, transitioning from malty sweetness to a dry, wood-inflected aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a smooth, velvety texture. Carbonation is moderate. A noticeable, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present, reflecting the strength of the ale without being hot or fusel. No astringency is noted despite the tea addition.
