Smach Double presents a robust take on the American IPA, drawing inspiration from high-gravity traditions while centering on a bold Spanish harvest of Columbus hops. This single-hop profile delivers a pungent sensory experience defined by vibrant grapefruit zest and soft peach undertones. The increased malt bill provides a sturdy, grainy backbone that balances the assertive bitterness without veering into excessive sweetness. A light, yeast-driven fruitiness complements the stone fruit hop notes, leading to a moderately dry, resinous finish. Despite its strength, the alcohol remains well-integrated, supporting the aromatic intensity of this slightly hazy, copper-hued ale.
Appearance.Medium gold to light reddish-amber (approx. 10–12 SRM). Off-white, medium-sized head with good persistence and light lacing. Slightly hazy as described.
Aroma.High intensity hop aroma featuring prominent citrus, specifically grapefruit, and stone fruit like peach from the Columbus hops, accompanied by a light herbal and resinous quality. Low to medium-low clean, bready maltiness supports the hops. Very light fruity esters are present.
Taste.Initial hop-forward impression of grapefruit and resin. The Columbus hops provide a firm, medium-high bitterness. A clean, grainy malt sweetness provides balance in the mid-palate with hints of toasted crust. The fermentation is mostly clean with subtle peach esters. Finishes medium-dry with a lingering hoppy and bitter aftertaste.
Mouthfeel.Medium body with a smooth, slightly creamy texture. Moderate to medium-high carbonation. Noticeable but smooth alcohol warmth at 6.9% ABV. No harshness or astringency.
