First Prize IPA is a sophisticated Red IPA that masterfully balances a sturdy malt foundation with assertive hop character. Its appearance is a deep, clear copper-red topped by a persistent off-white head. The aroma is highly expressive, featuring resinous pine and grapefruit zest layered over toasted caramel and subtle dark fruit esters. On the palate, a firm bitterness is immediately apparent, slicing through initial notes of toffee and biscuit. The finish is dry and clean, leaving a lingering trail of citrus peel. At 7.1% ABV, the beer provides a gentle, well-integrated warmth that complements its smooth, medium-bodied mouthfeel and complex profile.
Appearance. Deep amber to coppery red (15-18 SRM). Clear to brilliant clarity. Off-white to light tan head with good retention and fine lacing.
Aroma. Moderate-high hop intensity featuring notes of grapefruit peel, resinous pine, and subtle tropical fruit. Medium malt presence provides a foundational character of toasted caramel, dark bread, and light toffee. Clean fermentation profile with very low fruity esters.
Taste. Initial impression of toasted malt and caramel sweetness quickly met by medium-high bitterness. Hop flavors of orange zest and pine needles are prominent. The malt supports with biscuit and dark fruit nuances without being cloying. Finishes dry and crisp with a lingering, clean hop bitterness and a touch of roasted grain.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, slightly creamy texture. Moderate carbonation provides a crisp mouth-coating. A light, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present, reflecting its 7.1% strength.
