This sophisticated British Brown Ale is a study in depth, born from the second runnings of the Origin Story imperial stout. The sensory experience is defined by the addition of rum barrel-aged coffee from producer Rafael Amaya, which imparts an aromatic layering of dark chocolate, vanilla, and spiced spirit. On the palate, traditional nutty and toffee-like malt sweetness is structured by a more assertive roasted character than typically found in the style. Drying wood tannins and a lingering espresso bitterness provide a clean, complex finish. At 6% ABV, the beer offers a gentle, integrated warmth that elevates the dark fruit esters and earthy undertones.
Appearance. Deep mahogany to dark reddish-brown (22 SRM). Moderate tan head with good lacing. Clear to slightly opaque from coffee oils.
Aroma. Moderate-high intensity. Sweet malt notes of toffee and hazelnuts. Distinctive roasted coffee aroma with accents of vanilla and oaky rum. Very low earthy hop presence and light dark-fruit esters.
Taste. Initial malt sweetness of caramel and toasted biscuit. The mid-palate is dominated by roasted coffee and dark cocoa. Bitterness is moderate but perceived as higher due to coffee acidity and drying tannins from the wood and husks. Finishes dry and roasty with a clean malt aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with moderate carbonation. Light alcohol warmth. Features a slight but characteristic tannin-driven astringency that contributes to a drying sensation on the tongue.
