Mixed Blessings is a decadent Imperial Stout that showcases the complexity of bourbon barrel aging. The profile is defined by a luxurious interplay of dark chocolate and espresso malt notes, elevated by the bright, zesty fragrance of fresh lime. Hand-toasted coconut adds a creamy, tropical depth that softens the intensity of the twelve percent alcohol. Expect a viscous, oily texture where charred oak and vanilla from the barrels meld with dark fruit esters. The finish is warming and bittersweet, striking a balance between citrus acidity, roasted grain, and spirit-forward complexity for a truly indulgent and multi-layered sensory experience.

Appearance. Jet black and opaque (SRM 40). Pours with a dense, mocha-colored head that shows moderate retention and leaves thick lacing. Visible viscosity in the glass is evidenced by prominent legs.

Aroma. High intensity. The nose is dominated by bittersweet chocolate, roasted coffee, and rich vanilla from bourbon barrels. Fresh lime zest provides a bright, citrusy top note, while toasted coconut contributes a nutty, sweet creaminess. Substantial dark fruit esters of black currant and prune are present, underscored by smooth bourbon alcohol and charred oak.

Taste. Massive and complex. Initial flavors of dark roasted malts, cocoa, and burnt sugar are immediate. The mid-palate introduces the oily character of toasted coconut and the sharp, playful acidity of lime zest. Moderate to high bitterness from roasted grains provides balance against residual malt sweetness. Bourbon character adds layers of caramel and oak, leading to a long, warming finish with lingering espresso and lime oil.

Mouthfeel. Full to very full-bodied with a chewy, velvety, and exceptionally oily texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A significant, smooth alcohol warmth is present and well-integrated, reflecting the high gravity without being sharp.
